A re-evaluation of David Brandon-Jones’ 12 Hand Type Classification Method in palm reading

It is with great respect that I credit my mentor’s mentor for what you’re about to read. I have reworded and refreshed his method, injecting my own observations with David Brandon-Jones’ method of classifying the hands, detailed in his superb book: ‘Practical palmistry’. Throughout these hand types, I also refer often to the 4 elements as a way of tying in both hand type classification methods, keeping it within context, combining already established methods to shed light and understanding on the complex art and science of palm reading.

David-Brandon Jones was my mentor's mentor. I wish I could have met him.

The Goal and methods of hand types and classifying in palm reading

The aim of this assignment is to equip you with the greatest palmistry tool in arguably the most important and initial stage of hand analysis, classifying the hand type. Palm reading is referred to as a science and art, it is both logic and intuition. All the best detectives trust their hunches but are also highly rational. So where we begin in the process is key and like all sciences, there should be a formula. The first aim of palm reading should always begin with classifying hand the type. This is known as Chirognomy. Many palmists have their own individual methods. Some are entirely intuitive when palm reading, having little or no care for any hand type classification methods. Each to their own. This particular method is the largest pool of known hand types I know of, and in my opinion the greater the amount of hand types at your disposal, the more knowledge you will have as a starting point; thus, the more accuracy when concluding.

The already known methods of hand types in palm reading: the 4 elements

Many use 4 hand types, relating to the 4 elements. It's a good starting point but too vague to draw any specific revelations. This was first made popular by Fred Gettings as a way of introducing beginners to the topic, making a name for himself in the process. I enjoy his books, but for me this method isn't helpful for those more advanced palmists and anyone wanting to know more. If you wanted to learn to drive, you're best off getting in a car, not a go kart. Having said that. There is substance to the 4 element classification method and I relay a lot of the known theory back into the 12 hand type method in this blog for context and clarity.

The already known methods of hand types in palm reading: the 5th element

In South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and China, a 5th element is added to this former table, providing an extra dot on the die and decreasing the vagueness. This added element is Ether or sometimes known as Chi, (Qi) or energy. Life itself. This method utilises more of the hand as the fingers are assigned elements too, taking the often left out thumb into account. There are also methods that take into consideration wood and metal. The lines in the hands are also assigned elements in this method. These ideas all have merit but there is no reason not to study more schools of thought.

The already known methods of hand types in palm reading: the 6 hand types

Probably the most popular and most well known method of classifying the hands is the 6 hand types, with a mixed 7th. This was used by D'Arpentigny and Desbarrolles and also Cheiro and made famous by them. There is a great deal of substance to this method, although requires revision, as the 3 men mentioned here were aristocracy and it shows. The elementary hand for example is a person described as brutish and with insufficient intellect. What we know today is that there are many types of IQ. The reality is, that elementary hands often possess a physical intelligence that few do, and each hand types possess skills and traits that others do not.

The already known methods of hand types in palm reading: an unknown method

Georges Muchery devised a method of hand type classification that never took off. It's a great shame because for me this has greater bones than any mentioned so far. Muchery brilliantly incorporated the planets already assigned to the mounts by medieval palmists to hand types. In this way, he executed a method that could be well understood and made sense. He theorised that each of us are more inclined to one of the planets in out hands.

For example, a person with fingers leaning towards a long Apollo finger, (ring) with a well developed Apollo mount, would be described as an Apollonian, or an Apollo hand. The traits represented by Apollo encompassed the majority of this person's personality.

Unfortunately this idea of classifying people by the hands never took off, despite having a superb foundation. It's likely people began moving away from the medieval schools of thought at the time.

This method could have been built on..

The 12 hand type classification method in palm reading

The following is a comprehensive look at the most in depth and expansive model of hand type classification. Each is labelled as David Brandon Jones described, but I have infused my own thoughts, as well as incorporating the 4 elements for clarity.

1. The Primary hand type in palm reading

primary hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Primary Hand in Palmistry

These hands present as having a rough texture, often cold. The palms are almost, or just as broad as they are long. The fingers and thumb are chunky, short and stubby in, sometimes square at the tip, as well as the palm itself (this creates an ultra regimented individual!) There will be few lines on the palm, and they will normally be short, in some ways representing the simplicity of needs and nature. The image here shows an unusually deep feeling and creative Primary hand, note the long heart line. The mount of Luna is usually lacking, (not seen here) where Venus and inner Mars mounts compensate. The shortness of fingers reveals action over thought. Primary hands express themselves in a very pure form - physically. They do not use body language well, or vocalise their thoughts with any great vocabulary. They instead express themselves through their work, crafting, repairing or refurbishing, shouting, breaking things, sex, fighting and sports. These hands may appear stiff and cumbersome, but do not be fooled. The primary is far more skilled than most with their hands. Look for an angle at the back of the thumb for proficiency in timing and/or trade skills. Many with wide short hands have a tremendous ability and adept swiftness of the fingers, giving their efficient speedy efforts to laborious industries without complaint, even if in pain. Without such hands, fundamental industries would fail and owe more than just their appreciation to the Primary hand.

Primary hands are followers rather than leaders having little ability to decide for themselves, let alone others. The earthy nature of the palm ties this person to grounded work, usually practical and physical careers. Unless they are (unusually) lazy, they enjoy being useful. Relating best to that which doesn’t often move or change. Integrity, rules, loyalty and the ground itself. This is why they tend not to socialise with those more inclined to airy or watery notions like philosophy or dance. No primary will pick this book up I guarantee. Instead they often fall into working with the earth itself or crafts of some kind, roadwork, perhaps a devout service, high in principle, like the military or caring. They are indeed themselves a mountain by nature, a volcano at worst. Predictable, stoic and stubborn. They are more able to physically endure more than most hand types, but challenging them on their unmovable principles may cause them to erupt. When they do no one can stop them, revealing them instead as a dormant volcano all along. They can be dangerous physically in this case. This is why it is so important to Allow the Primary to feel heard, and allow them to vent and rant, especially when met with unsettling change or insult to them or a loved one. This will enable them to let off steam and resume being the steady tool to society they so enjoy being. (Check the thumb for rage tendencies - if balloon shaped with an enlarged bulbous tip in appearance, this is vital! It’s safer for all if they stay a mountain) Otherwise, they tend not to suffer with stress in the same way other hand types do. Stone is the least affected by the other elements.

Primary hands make superb employees and friends. If they activate their aggressive side, it’s likely through provocation only, having little desire to hurt another with premeditated thought. Once they have released and expressed their feelings, they give their actions little afterthought or reflection.

There is little care or ability to plan ahead or ability to reason, especially If the tips of the fingers are rounded. They will live entirely in the moment. It’s for the best if another supports them with money, pensions, bills, holidays and admin tasks. The worst kind of Primary will spend all their money in the pub in one night, get into a fight and wake up to start all over again. The best kind will be very hard working, considerate and caring and develop strong bonds between a select few, being loyal to a fault. Lacking imagination benefits the Primary as they cannot easily picture what may be to become worried or scared. They rarely become anxious either for the same reason. Their often immense sense of timing and keen responses enables their safety rather than their own sensibility and foresight.

Primary hands are some of the hardiest among humanity and respect the laws of nature, survival of the fittest. They are found in and working with these laws, as wild as any beast at heart, but in sync, in harmony when in a natural rhythm.

2. The Useful hand type in palm reading

useful hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Useful Hand in Palmistry

The resemblance to the primary hand is similar in this class, but there is more development about the mount of Luna, Jupiter finger is often short, suggesting high testosterone and a possible inferiority complex. The fingers and thumb are longer and often more rounded, providing a little more thought before action. The lines in the hand are still few but are not as straight as the Primary and also longer, presenting a softer approach, more sensitivity and ability to imagine and ask ‘what if?’

There may be some minor markings to note as well, perhaps making their way from some of the major lines.

Nails in the Useful hand are often wide and bitten short, a sign of self criticism and a short temper. On closer inspection, the Useful hand differs to the Primary by touch as there appears to be greater elasticity and warmth, a smoother feel.

The Useful hand will be able to use some body language, and have access to expression through more creative means, being able to create practical items of beauty, like chairs, pottery, sculpting from wood or clay with great skill. It is in these masterful creations they unconsciously pour their many hidden and complex emotions. They find however verbalising their thoughts and feelings a struggle, this is negated somewhat if the Jupiter and/or Mercury fingers form something of a point. Otherwise, the attempt to vocalise itself can cause communication. Useful hands excel when they others how, rather than tell. They can teach in this way to great effect. Enabling a Useful hand to open up works by finding a topic the Useful hand knows and has a love of, and suddenly they will be able to articulate with ease. Once this is achieved, integrating emotive questions into the conversation while keeping relevant may yield results in growth of vocalising. For example. A gifted Useful hand carpenter, finds opening about their anger issues difficult, but when asked to convey how thinking about what anger might look like in a carving could result in greater self understanding. In this way, a therapeutic vehicle for releasing stress and tension through work and using the hands is healthy. For the Useful hand, sculpting from within is the answer.

Like the Primary hand, the Useful has little time for the ideas of the future and cannot abide by pointless unnecessary dressed up ceremonies. The idea of shopping in a city or a ballroom dance with aristocracy is hell to them. The food yes, but experience and mutual and universal speech of the soul is their language. Especially if an escape line or travel line is present. The useful hand can get along with most, provided this mutual interest is understood in their company. They would much rather visit a low key festival and rough it out until money runs out, or enjoy an evening partying with natives in the amazon. A plan as to how to get home when long distance travelling is not on the top of the list of priorities, nor is organisation even, the experience however is. It’s all about the journey after all, not the destination.

Emotional articulation is the Useful hands greatest obstacle, especially if the Mercury finger is low set. Useful hands are on the cusp of being able to speak their thoughts, but are impeded by their design. This creates a contradiction within, as their complex emotions and thoughts can manifest into something unhealthy if a vehicle for expression is not discovered. Managing these frustrations and understanding them is the key to unlocking expressive capacity for the Useful hand.

Useful hands have a complex eddy of emotion underneath a cool calm and collected exterior. Most are misjudged in this respect, because they have an ability to understand feelings, but may appear not to and often find themselves unable to speak the language back. Like a mute in a world of the blinded.

Like the Primary, they feel close to nature and its laws, they respect strength and so feel if they try to be vulnerable, they are weakened to possible attack when they try to open up. On the other hand can come across as unfeeling, emotionally inept and rough if they try to protect themselves by keeping their walls up if they feel threatened. More aware of his actions, Useful hands have a greater capacity to reason unlike the Primary, bearing longer sloping headlines. Like the Primary though, if they cannot manage powerful emotions and find release for pent up feelings, inflamed related physical issues may manifest. This likelihood is increased where grief is concerned and the hand’s owner has not been brought up with the understanding that opening up is healthy, that tears are not a sign of weakness. There is a simultaneous nature of two elements in this hand, Earth and Air. The need to remain yet to explore. To stay solid yet transform. This makes understanding them difficult, especially if both elements are equal in strength. The Useful hand may well find they search for answers externally, in order to understand and make peace with their complex self. Siding with one of their elements to achieve this calm is the answer. The partner of the Useful hand will need to be patient and understanding of their internal complexities, sensitive, but not so much that the useful hand might hurt them with periodic harsh melancholia. Useful hands prefer being mocked over praise by family and friends. Praise appears disingenuous, and finds his own achievements unworthy, moving the goal posts each time due to a low sense of adequacy. The Useful hand ought to learn how others are inspired by their efforts and impact on the world, they are the natural artists of us.

3. The Energetic hand type in palm reading

energetic hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Energetic Hand In Palmistry

The hand that reaches out without fear in its outgoing appearance. The fingers emerge as if unstoppable in their continuous efforts to soak up and tackle all the world has to offer, from cradle to the grave. (extra long in this example) The large and low hanging Luna mount and the rising Jupiter mount provides this palm with a slightly triangular impression. The thumb is long, as are the spade-like and heavy fingers. Increasing the capability as both thinking and the will to act on them are seen. The fingers, if very long, slows down information processing, creating greater analysis. The heavily rounded fingers show the need to know now!

The increased potential for IQ is seen in the increased length of the Mercury finger in combination with the headline. The finger nails often fan outward, taking on the look of a kitchen spatula. This utensil is where these fingers get their name ‘spatulate’ from. Spatulate features stand for action as the energy splays outward, like a geyser. The large tip of Apollo seen here shows both tremendous action and appreciation in the area of natural beauty. The palm’s surface is softer than previous hand types seen here. The life line is often seen arcing outwards confidently towards Luna, (travel) increasing the size of the Venus mount. Courage is seen here by the ability to take life into the unknown. The Venus mount, being well developed provides increases vitality and charisma, expanding the personality.

The skin is usually resilient and springy, showing they are full of enthusiasm, motivation and of life and a zest for all it has to offer. The surface of the skin being harder the natural force they have to give the world is obstructed, when the hand is soft, their energy is expended fruitlessly. The amount of moisture the palm provides will indicate the rate of metabolism, and is likely high.

If the lower section of the hand is widened their material and physical needs and abilities are increased. They will likely enjoy exploration and reinvention, constant challenges. They are pioneers. Ready to challenge others also.

If the top section of the palm is wider, they value the emotional and spiritual more, seeking instead to throw themselves with every fibre of their being into wellness, religious or social work.

It is imperative the energetic hand takes time to understand their body as they fire on all cylinders every day and are at risk of burning themselves out, especially if the life and head line are separated, perception and reality. Vertical lines spreading across every phalange will tell the tale of a person who is suffering from glandular issues like adrenal burnout and hyper-adrenalism. The energetic and Dynamic hands are at greater risk of this. Energetic hands are happiest when doing something, anything. They require a focus to funnel their forces. In this way they often discover their talents and learn how to play to their strengths earlier in life than many others.

Energetic hands are more likely to become record breakers, astronauts, explorers, travellers. They desire causes in the forms of challenge and revel in the search for a new one. The person’s hand in this image, could well buy a plot of land and create an animal sanctuary for endangered species, breaking ground with increasing the population of on the brink of extinction animals. (just an example)

Look for bitten nails in the energetic hand to see the sign of frustration due to wasted passion and talents. It would be a shame to see this in the Energetic hand for them and the world around them. Advice and support in how to avoid self criticism should be provided if seen, especially if the second phalanx of Apollo is wasted.

Energetic hands require satisfaction through effort and action. They need to complete goals and achieve, achievements are not the aim of the game. Nothing is more appealing to them than conquering against all the odds, to do the impossible, to bring it back from the dead, to win the race on the last lap despite the injury.

Energetic hand types make superbly fascinating people in both conversation and as life partners. Confinement is torture to the Energetic though, especially if the Mercury finger leans drastically away from the hand. A partner need to adhere to this need, it is not a desire. They may have to wait for the sporadic email while their energetic partner is climbing mount Everest, or roughing it in the outback for some seemingly insane reason - adventure. Their partner must be as adventurous or highly understanding of the energetic hand’s intense desire to seek out and experience challenge.

The Energetic hand gains their innate force and enthusiasm from a mixture of the elements, mostly Air but also water and/or fire can be seen in the palm. This explains how the forces within constantly move, as each aspect of themselves is in constant flux with another. The overriding Air element creates the desire for the thirst for knowledge and changing and challenging ideas. Water creates the dream and Fire - the physical motivation to carry it out. After this has been completed, the cycle repeats, changing the Energetic hand a little each time. This complexity can lead to relationship issues if they have not found a suitable partner and, possibly, if they change too much and eventually become a different person altogether. If they have not gained greater self understanding by middle age, it increases the potential for what used to be known as the ‘mid life crisis’. The law of ‘conservation of energy’ applies here:

“Energy can neither be created nor destroyed: rather can be only transformed or transferred from one form to another.” - Einstein's theory of relativity.

4. The Dynamic hand type in palm reading

dynamic hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Dynamic Hand in Palmistry

There is nothing conventional about the Dynamic hand, being more commonly found in the hands of women, it is easily noted by the triangular appearance, with the Jupiter mount being high set and with a narrowing base where the palm meets the wrist. The Luna mount is often under developed but Mercury is strong, creating wider upper section of the palm. Like the Energetic hand, the fingers splay outwards with confidence but are knottier. The Jupiter finger often leans in towards the thumb, indicating the desire to mould the world around them. The thumb may be heavy and higher set, spatulate or conic. Like the Energetic, the Dynamic hand will be moist and springy, again showing the high metabolic rate and energy. The lines in the palms themselves are often many, showing increased thoughts, possible anxiety. The lines are long and curved, deeply marked and often islanded.

The increased in the width at the top of the palm enhances the emotional and spiritual realms and knocks the person out of balance in how they are governed by this, especially if the heart and head line are merged! Or if the life and headline are not, as seen in the image here. This is because perception is not as tied to reality, creating impatience and impulsivity. The ideas of the Dynamic hand flow upwards, bursting into the active fingers, all too often rounded.

Being that the physical, (in particular) the material and the mental are not as prominent in the palm, it represents what the Dynamic hand places their values and emphasis on all things Saturnian and Jupiterian, family, ethics, spirituality, relationships, integrity, ambition, judgement, feeling. Others and the self. Hiding in where they sit in between the two is their life lesson. They have less constitution and care less for materials and academia, but have a greater faith, belief. Their aims in their efforts are almost always aimed at helping others in whatever profession they choose. There is an inherent belief that if they can just get over the next mountain all will be well. The Dynamic hand lacks physical strength, but their strength of mind and core values has such a determination, that they often bypass their bodily needs in order to achieve their goals, resulting in adrenal malfunctions and burnout. They have a massive amount of mental resilience than their more physically durable rivals. This is common in Dynamic hands. No one would be stronger under mental torture.

But being that their overall physicality is reduced, so too are their physical needs.

Sex is not on the top of their priorities in a relationship, but their connection on an emotional level is. In this way, They are, in some ways, unrealistic in terms of their expectations in others. The heart line of the Dynamic will be deeply marked and curve gently and often reach over onto the Jupiter mount, showing high idealism, if not, it will almost always end in between Jupiter and Saturn; showing a clear and strong moral compass. For many Dynamic hands, a plutonic life long relationship will suffice, as long as the connection remains deep and meaningful in that relationship. Partners of the Dynamic hand have a difficult task. They must be similarly built, strong but relaxed, highly understanding, level headed and have superb communication skills, to help provide the balance so needed in the Dynamic’s chaotic life. Dynamic hands are dominant by nature, natural leaders and highly ambitious. They respect in others, what they value. In finding a partner, they do not respect those that are ‘weaker’ than themselves in strength of character, but often feel challenged and defensive if they find a person who equals this. Many Dynamic hands remain single for this reason, and find relationships more trouble than they're worth, however lonely they might be. They often seek out partners, only to experience the same results, or give up in their romantic endeavours entirely. The heavier the thumb, the greater the likelihood of relationship issues.

They may not have a great deal of time for relationships anyway, like the Energetic hand, they are in a constant state of overdrive, being workaholics. Making time for their relationships as well as their bodies and their own basic needs is important, recognising that they must look after the fundamentals, as they will see it is vital. They all too often neglect their own annoying needs in exchange for the satisfaction they receive from their work and actioning their many thoughts and feelings. For these reasons, an equal length of logic and will in the Dynamic hand’s thumbs are most desirable.

They usually throw themselves into their work, ignoring the dirty mugs piling up at home. Their careers often fall into a role of providing. Teaching, caring, risk assessors, social work, nursing, catering or a creative industry where they can pour their great sense of feeling and personality into. Whatever they do, their overall purpose is to better the lives of others in some way. The Dynamic is hard working and resourceful, able to find solutions to just about any situation. Being born leaders, they are often critical delegators and, if they are not in positions of leadership, can be criticised themselves for being overbearing and ‘bossy’.

Support to become more emotionally articulate is a usual requirement, especially if the Mercury finger is low set as it often is. This represents deeper seated insecurities and low self worth, despite their confidence.

The dynamic hand is doomed to repeat their mistakes unless they learn from them. They commonly suffer from frustration, anxiety and often display something akin to madness; repeating the same behaviours with the hope of a different result. Support to recognise their mistakes is vital in this respect, but their partners may not be the best people for them to point this out.

Air dominates this hand but also Fire. They are powerfully logical, practical and motivated but can also be erratic like whirlwinds, creating friction in others as they go. At worst they are back drafts, fire tornadoes when out of control. They have no problem in challenging others’ ideas and creating great change, often in no time at all, where others might struggle to know where to start. They are able, self-reliant and a law unto themselves.

5. The Practical hand type in palm reading

practical hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Practical Hand in Palmistry

Like the Primary, the squarish palm represent the dependability and safety, grounded and logical practicality of the person. The thumbs are usually fairly heavy and long. The more angles we see, the more this applies, the more order and rigidity, the more that timing applies too. The Practical hand has a square palm with medium length of fingers. One or more of the fingers are often square tipped, if not, they tend to have a more personable approach and be less rigid, living more in the moment, being more able to respond with speed in a time of crisis. The Jupiter finger is usually short, showing high testosterone and a reduced ego like the Primary. The Practical hand is similar to the Primary hand, with it’s generally few lines, placed higher on the hand, with the exception of having a longer heartline on average. This shows a greater sense of idealism, and purpose towards contributing to society and the greater good. The Practical hand has a strong code of conduct, one of valour. Knights, the kind the Medieval French wrote about, would have mostly had Practical hands, if we’re to believe it all. The angle on the back of the thumb enables skills with the hands.

Normally the head and the life line tightly joined, showing caution and conventional thinking. If detached, this shows an unorthodox and resourceful approach to finding solutions. Such a person wouldn’t think twice about dressing their children in identical clothing so as not to lose them in a crowd or washing up with a toilet brush, arguing that it was purchased for that sole purpose. Yes mum, you’re an unorthodox practical/analytical hand.

The presence of the palm itself is one of security and reliability. It is the kind of hand that you’d feel safe and actually be safe in the hands of. The squareness, like the Primary or Useful hands, provide truth, order and loyalty. Squares in palmistry provide protection wherever we see them. The practical hand’s square palm provides an all round sense of duty. It is the kind of hand you’d expect to see a construction site manager have, someone who understands the needs of others and respects and understands everyone’s place in the world. They make good employers and employees for these reasons. Everything is in its right place with the practical hand. Mel Gibson is a good example of a Practical hand. In another life, he’d have been something like a no nonsense foreman, firm but fair. This sums up the Practical hand pretty well, especially where the square tipped fingers apply.

Practical hands are the embodiment of the down to earth type, this should come as no surprise, being Earth hands, with a touch of Air at times. They certainly make incredible builders. Whatever they do, they look to construct, repair or maintain.

Practical hands have traditional values and work best with their hands. They stand for the rules and upholding these. They believe in and obey the law. There has to be order in the world, hierarchy and bureaucracy, this is necessary to the Practical, because should the systems by which they have invested in and their world is built on collapse, so too would the practical hand. It’s hard to imagine too, being that they are so stolid. Right and wrong are a staple compass, a rudder for life.

If a Practical hand is following a recipe book, a minor adjustment makes it a different recipe altogether and it is ruined. If it is not written down, it's not a rule, and therefore it doesn’t apply. Improvisation is not something they feel comfortable taking part of.

Working with their hands provides a great sense of job satisfaction, especially if two or more fingertips are square, otherwise a service of integrity where ethics are maintained will suffice, like policing or caring, like in this image. This person was a builder, who became a support worker.

Leaving the Practical hand in positions to make decisions that require on the spot thinking without a manual would not be ideal. They are not highly imaginative, or egotistical. They do not feel it is their place to invent, they are followers, not leaders, even if employers. An employer Practical hand would rigidly follow legislation to do right by their employees, but also so they don’t trip up over the red tape they have so carefully noted while others seem to skip around without the adequate PPE.

The practical hand respects those that respect the rules they have had to follow because it creates a mutual alliance. Having such a clear understanding of boundaries, they do not create inappropriate bonds between colleagues, they are superbly impartial when assessing the facts, however black and white.

Their every i will be dotted, their every hole filled in. You can be sure if you have asked a self employed carpenter to build you something, it will have been quoted cautiously and crafted to perfection, just as the rulebook says it should have.

Conformity and regime can dominate to a point where others may become bored with them, again particularly where more squareness is seen. They are not natural romantics, being that these are unwritten rules. They may struggle in finding a partner for this reason. A partner of the Practical hand may well try to change this inflexible quality to add spice to their relationships. It is best to instead be supportive of and share their core values. Water is required to soften the earth to create an environment suitable for change, but change must be for the benefit of the individual. Partners of the Practical should be Analytical, or another slightly longer handed sympathetic Practical hand could serve to enrich and allow the earthy Practical hand with much needed occasional growth, in moderation of course. A little at a time. Too much water and there will be a flood, and the practical will be pushed away, unable to breathe.

6. The Analytical hand type in palm reading

analytical hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Analytical Hand in Palmistry

The analytical hand’s palm is long as are the fingers which bear their analytical knots, slowing down thought processing even further, to create a deeper thinker. The longer the fingers, the more logical and analytical. The greater size and length of the thumb along with the finger, enhances thinking further and enables thought into action, providing the skills of a writer. The palm’s extra length here increases the capacity for thought, imagination and reason, as the mounts and mental realms are elongated. Because of this length, there is a greater possibility of the head and the life line to be detached in the Analytical palm, distancing perception from reality, placing less value on the physical, material and environment. The larger this gap, the greater the unorthodox thinking, but also impatience. A need to know now! In this image, this person’s life and head line are attached, adding to practicality and conformity in their thinking. The palm has a concave, (showing a flexibility in social situations) and has right angles at its edges like the Practical or Useful hand might, again offering a practical approach. The skin may be cold and grey to pink. The thumb is long and low set, a sign of a book lover and humanitarian. Analytical hands are almost always avid readers, absorbers of information. Should this thumb’s angle be able to reach a 90 degree angle it provides an openness to what is possible and a greater thirst for knowledge. The thumb’s second phalanx is often longer than the first as logic prevails in the Analytical hand. At the back of the thumb, an angle is often observed, showing a sense of timing and acute manual dexterity. Musical ability is possible. The longer the hand, the more inclined to lower spinal problems. Anxiety is often seen in these hands, so great and constant are their thoughts, apparent if the palm has many lines.

The Analytical hand is often introverted; they are heavily introspective, scribes, lecturers, scholars and academics make a great deal. The great length of the fingers shows the need to break down each detail, sifting and fine combing through the facts. This type of mental endurance in their quest for the facts makes them superb data analysts, able to detect oncoming asteroids, forecast the weather or financial stock markets. (particularly if the second phalanges are longest) They can be critical of these details, able to spot mistakes and correct them, giving them a sense of great satisfaction. This is especially true the greater the knots found in the fingers. The longer the fingers, the greater the capacity to think but the slower to physically act. The useful or dynamic hand would have completed building their Ikea furniture while the Analytical would be found still reading the instructions. Whereas the Useful or Primary hands would excel in the routine and labour intensive environment of a factory setting; the Analytical hand would suffer tremendously mentally, and would be better suited to running diagnostics on the machinery instead. Being able to soak up the information all around them, Analytical hands are often highly sensitive and are more liable to suffer from over stimulation and sensory issues, ADHD and ASD are more likely to be found in these hands.

Analytical hands make superb conversationalists, able to listen, reason and debate. They do not care to be so much about being correct, but rather to discover what is correct. They can often reel facts from memory with distinction, as though they are living books themselves. A well developed Luna mount would compliment this hand with an imaginative edge. The more conic the tips, the more flexibility in their opinions and ideas and ability to change them. This can create a much more fun and interesting, even creative personality, as opposed to the rigidity seen in the clear cut thinking of the square tipped Analytical hand. However, while diplomatic, the concave of the palm and wasting of the second phalanx of the thumb along with conic fingertips, threatens to render the Analytical hand weak in standing up for themselves and their beliefs. The work/routine loving angular aspects of the palm, can create inner conflict with the fun loving conic finger tips, as a need for order can be at odds with chaos. Changing their routines and order is required for happiness to be achieved in this case.

Their character is often defined by their knotty knuckles, creating a goofy, nerdiness about them, this can be seen as very attractive, or annoying.

Analytical hands are either planners, tactical, masters of statistics, or if conic fingered and Luna developed, creative and harmonious, lovers of music, architectural design and nature. They say ignorance is bliss, Analytical hands often struggle with their sense of self in the world they are so aware of. Self confidence and worth is a common obstacle. This is seen when the fingers appear too thin for the palm, especially the Mercury finger. There is a common inferiority complex as shown by a short Jupiter finger in these hands. If so they will present as confident, but feel as though they are not enough within, constantly moving their own goal posts of success. If the Jupiter finger is long as seen here, they may well rise to a position of employer.

A partner of the Analytical hand must encourage the need for change to inspire, entice and excite, to provide opportunity in adventure as energy is often missing in their lives. Doomed is the Analytical who does not recognise their own need for fun, to live and travel, to see and feel. Analytical hands often bear the mark of an escape line. This is due to their intense need to learn, explore and understand. In my experience, Analytical hands will either travel early on in life, or much later. The latter, should they ignore their own innate need for adventure.

The Analytical hand will be most able to achieve happiness once they have introspectively and impartially compartmentalised their character into its fundamental elements. When they see all of who they are and how and why they work, they can do anything they wish, as well as find peace.

The Analytical hand’s element is water, through and through. They require some support from a mixture of elements to inspire change in the right way. An energetic or Dynamic hand would suit as a partner well, due to their many encouraging and fascinating elements.

7. The Intellectual hand type in palm reading

intellectual hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Intellectual Hand in Palmistry

These hands are long, bony, slender, thin, taut and angular. The fingers are medium to long in length and heavily knotted but also thin and usually taper to conic or a point. The thumb is low set, wide at the first phalanx and usually ends in a delicate point. (not so much here) The palm itself depresses at the centre and has something of a jaundiced look. The nails are usually long with also a slightly yellow appearance and the lines too will tumble across the surface, with an inevitability about them.

Intellectual hands are not easy to come across because they are almost always self isolating. The image shown here is not the perfect example due to this. Solitary folk often have a Saturn finger that is very long and both Saturn and Apollo fingers have something of a space between them on the left hand. The life line will often hug the Venus mount fairly tightly, reducing the social network and essentially, fun that this person receives in their life. The Intellectual chooses the company of books rather than people, of quiet contemplation and learning, abstaining from the many, the overstimulated, baser inspired debauched endeavours of the masses. Books don’t try to hurt, dominate, destroy or steal. They sustain knowledge and speak in a way that the Intellectual can understand. They may become writers themselves, but not for profit or acknowledgement, rather to preserve history or knowledge. Cheiro would have referred to these hands as philosophic, being monks, scribes, the mind expanding loner, choosing to live a life of absolute solitude and peace. Attaining true enlightenment is their goal, not followers on instagram or numbers in an account. For the Intellectual, these are inventions of the now, and when we die it is all for naught.

They are unaffected by that which might affect most due to this. Remaining calm, unexcited and neutral, impartial. To many, they may come across as boring and cynical, it matters little to the intellectual what others think though. They are often articulate, having an ability to say what they think concisely, striking the heart of the matter.

Relationships with others and the material come last. Few opportunities come their way as a result of hiding in the shadows, observing from the outside. Their position and stance on matters can also isolate them further. The philosophy of the intellectual is often one of high morals and choosing to omit experiencing pleasure, in order to achieve something greater. It should be said that not all intellectuals start life this way, having first tasted it only to later decline a life of vices, finding it leaving them with a bitter taste. For many they may have fate lines which begin with many far reaching roots on Neptune - a life of strife, with eventual and gradual achievement.

They may abscond the many pleasures of life, but they do have a tendency to be rather self concerned, at worst selfish. Their personality is not of warmth and generosity but of piety and prudence. The Saturn mount may sit higher on the palm for this reason. Their heartlines are often straight and fairly high set, appearing cold and callous at times.

The Intellectual hand is of both ice cold water and a touch of fire elements, creating a duality of complexity. Socially, in public at best they are lukewarm. The push and pull of contrasting elements can make them an uncomfortable and unsuitable fit for many in life, in friendships as well as relationships. Even trying to help them when they need it is not easy, as their knee jerk reaction can often come across as defensive. They rarely choose partners in life, and are just as rarely chosen, opting for celibacy rather than companionship. They are sometimes something akin to asexual beings, appearing a little alien to others.

The intellectual hands among us, are the spiritual and religiously moral judges of humankind, capable of identifying and condemning those around them for their indecent acts, their flaws, but are often incapable of seeing their own flaws despite their self concerned nature. They are the outsiders of society, no others have the capability of impartiality, except when it comes to themselves. Their view is based on something older, higher, not of this time. They are detached from society, eager and ready to walk alone on the tough road of trials and tribulations towards enlightenment.

8. The Sensual hand type in palm reading

sensual hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Sensual Hand in Palmistry

These hands are the opposites to the Intellectual in both appearance and in nature. The Sensual palm is flabby, conic in appearance, well rounded, soft and moist when touched, the skin has a reduced springiness. The fingers have widened basal phalanges, indicating the importance of physical needs, these fingers sometimes taper to a conic or a pointed end, strengthening the need to satisfy in the here and now. The thumb is usually heavy, conic, high set and bends back at its tip, and has a large mount of Venus as its base. The palm itself, unlike the Intellectual hand, is rather thick, lackinga depression at the centre and longer than its fingers, usually somewhere in between a square and a rectangle. The lines in the palms are long, sometimes white and heavily islanded, often the heart line if any.

At first, it may appear that these hands belong to an overweight person, but the Sensual hand is akin to the conic, and I have seen these hands belong to those neither obese, nor underweight.

The widened phalanges are partly where this hand acquires its name as the Sensual is almost always in constant search to satisfy and gratify desires. They are the hedonists among us, lovers of the pleasures of life and the life and soul of the party. They may well enjoy throwing parties, movie nights, theme parks, fun fairs, all you can eat buffets and gaming online with friends. They are almost always organising their next adventure, meal or activity, as long as it doesn’t involve too much exertion.

Sex, music, TV shows and films, food, drugs and alcohol - Sensual hands know what they like, and as a result often have a good understanding of what others like. In this way, they understand a fundamental trait of the human condition to a fine art. They are often creative, innovators and entrepreneurs. They make superb connoisseurs by their very nature, food tasters and food critics, game testers. Sensual hands can be seen at the top of the food or entertainment industries. Harvey Weinstein or Lou Pearlman would be a good examples. Their hands are full bodied, like their personalities. They are usually have an excellent sense of humour. They very often have many friends and a rich social life. This can be seen by the arc of the life line, and how large the Venus mount is, as well as other finger leanings.

The Sensual hand is at risk of succumbing to their baser desires in the worst instance. They can be impulsive and impatient, this is especially true the shorter the fingers and more so if the head and the life line are detached, and if the life line appears to widen as it arcs around the thumb. Sensual hands are often generous, wanting others to experience the joy they do, this is also seen by the wide arc of the lifeline.

Obesity is an unfortunate and common occurrence in the Sensual hand. This is not always due to their physical needs but rather physical conditions. An imbalanced thyroid can be seen by three vertical lines on the tip of the Mercury finger, to determine its activity, assess the quality of the skin at the centre of the palms. If dryer and more coarse than it should be, this is likely an underactive thyroid. (The Sensual hand usually has moist skin)

The heartline that bears overlapping and long islanded loops, giving it a wider look, is often a sign of toxins in the blood, too many metals. This may indicate why and how the thyroid is affected!

Sensual hands are more likely to be at risk of blood clots and heart ailments, check the width of the heart line. If this is darker and wide, it is a possible sign of high cholesterol. A light doubling of the heart line might appear above the heart line near the Saturn mount, this is a sign of a weak heart and possible atrial fibrillation. Sensual hands are also at risk of diabetes, this can be seen with intensely careful study in dermatoglyphics, a subject I won’t go into great detail in this book.

The lack of a concave seen at the centre indicates a certain lack of ability to retain energy, thus a constant need to replenish it becomes habitual. Where the Sensual hand has a strong energy of spirit and character, they lack this in physical terms, feeling drained quickly if they need to rely on their stamina for any demanding task.

This is shown by the conic thumb - bending. Such folk can work brilliantly for short periods only, and may require a power nap.

Being stuck on a desert island with them would not benefit you, but you would benefit them, as they’d have the ideas and possibly even the audacity to delegate, but little gusto to get their hands dirty themselves. They’d be great fun in conversation and allow you a much needed sense of escape however. Spending enough time in their company may prove fruitful however, as they often truly do have brilliant solutions to problems.

The more conic the fingers, the more energetic in ideas they may be, and more inclined to a creative career, especially if the head line curves gently, venturing into the Luna mount. Sensual hands require a partner who is able to provide their many ideas the physical endurance needed to enact them. In this way they will have found the yin to their yang. But may demand too much from others. A practical or Useful hand will enable them to see their thoughts enacted, but allow them to see some of the errors in their ways, encouraging healthier living along the way. Sensual hands require dependability, structure and order. They are often ambitious dreamers, that lack the ability or motivation to make it happen. Particularly if the palm is not so firm. They operate best with a team working underneath them. A balanced thumb is key here.

Sensual hands can appear greatly motivated at first, impassioned even, only to later discover they have lost the initial inspiration that drove them for some unknown reason. They have interchangeable moods and thought processes that follow. To provide a scenario: A Sensual handed king felt insulted by something minor, rallies his troops and orders the banners raised, only to have changed his mind and completely lost the desire for action by the time his men are ready because he realises there’s a jousting competition next week, followed by games and a feast.

Sensual hands are inspired by all that inspires itself, all that emotes, poetry, song, art, dance, theatre, food and a great story.

The sensual hand is one of mostly earth with a touch of fire elements. They are slow to move and change, materially and physically focused, grounded and predictable in needs but fluid in thought and encouraging in personality. They are able to inspire others to action, but not so much themselves.

9. The Lively hand type in palm reading

lively hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Lively Hand in Palmistry

The Lively hand is something in between the Dynamic, Egocentric and Sensual hand in appearance. In truth there is something of all there types residing within. There are well developed basal phalanges on the fingers creating less spaces between the fingers. This increases the chances to gain wealth. There are soft curves throughout and a springy resilience to the palm when pressed, suggesting a high amount of creative energy. The palm is rounded, slightly longer than square and thicker than the average, but not as thick as the Sensual hand. The inner Mars mount is often raised and large. The fingers and thumb taper to conic or rounded tips. The thickness of the fingers provides the strength of personality and a certain bluntness, a no nonsense approach. The thumb bends slightly and is strong, low to medium set and the lines are long, deeply marked and slope gently.

The springiness to the palm’s surface is also an indicator of lively character and personality. They are often very funny and highly likeable. There is often a loop of humour seen etched into the skin ridge patterns between Mercury and Apollo. The conic fingers (Jupiter and Mercury seen here) means that their many ideas flow but are enabled to action by the strength of their powerful thumbs.

The Lively hand is a fairly rare type overall. Lively hands are emotionally motivated to action, they are clever, with long Mercury fingers and headlines. They are good with money and cunning. I have never known a Lively hand not to have some sort of manipulative streak, for good or bad.

In the best scenario they rise to positions that reform corrupted systems to better the lives of many, entertaining as they do, brightening the lives around them. In the worst case, they manipulate their partners and others in unpredictable ways to exploit, and can scheme and even be violent. Rupert Murdoch has a Lively hand. The Mercury finger will indicate which way they lean in this respect. Lively hands are unpredictable in a variety of ways. They come up with and implement ideas that many find radical or impractical, for the Lively hand thrives on change and movement. The Practical, Useful and Primary hands often work in positions under the Lively, subject to, and irritated by their many changeable plans. For the Lively hand, It is better to try than to have never known and to keep doing the same thing is boring and akin to stagnation. The Lively hand abhors routine as it clashes with their ever changing thoughts, unlike those with square palms who thrive off the structure it provides. Lively hands would rather see chaos than order. If the thumb tapers to a point, it shows expensive and refined tastes. This would mean they are good at acquiring assets and are proud to own them but as good at gaining wealth as they are, they spend it just as quickly.

The lively hand, like the Sensual is prone to succumbing to their desires as their basal phalanges show, but have the energy and drive to achieve this, especially if the inner Mars mount is well developed.

Depending on their moral makeup, the Lively hand may be inclined to compensate for the rut that is their relationship, by having affairs or earning a second secret income. Lively hands know their worth and aren’t afraid to move on, in relationships or career, should things feel slow. They crave excitement through the experience of change. The partner of the Lively hand must understand this, and be prepared to spice up and add change to their romantic life, as well as encourage the Lively to try new things with them. This will strengthen the bond between them.

The Lively hand is most likely to start up a side project from a hobby for a little fun alongside full time employment, only for it to turn into a full scale franchise and develop a life of its own. They would rather sell this, keeping a few shares rather than allowing it to become boring.

In film noirs, the scarlet vixen sums up many aspects of the Lively hand well. They know how to get the best out of situations and of people, for good or bad.

Lively hands may find they are somewhat prone to depression and feel deeply, but lack the ability to truly allow themselves to go through the necessary emotional processes due to their innate quickness of the mind. They are prone to unresolved grief manifesting physically or mentally due to this.

Lively hands often end up in careers that motivate through ethical causes, job roles that require quick thinking, solutions and fires to be put out. They need challenge and change in equal measure. Working in a variety of roles would suit: Flipping houses, acting, Social care, social services and health services and even being a spy.

The unpredictability about the Lively is best explained by the elements. Mostly Fire with some Water. They have the same elements as the Intellectual, but in reverse amounts. Push and pull. They are warm hearted, requiring a little fuel to keep burning. They can make steam often and can be fiery in public, causing drama. This is sometimes required as they see it, as they are powerful motivators for great change, destructive in words and action, but full of creative and adaptable forces enough to conquer any challenge in life, provided they allow themselves the time.

10. The Egocentric hand type in palm reading

egocentric hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Egocentric Hand in Palmistry

There are in fact two different types of Psychic hand if we were to elaborate on the classic 19th century model of hand classification of 7, with which these next two types are based. This is the rarer of the two, luckily. It isn’t easy to differentiate between the Intuitive and the Egocentric hands at first, but this hand is cold and hard to the touch unlike the Intuitive. There will be little give and flex to the fingers or palm when pressure is applied. The fingers are not quite  ⅞ ‘s of the palm’s length and are conic or pointed at the tips. The fingers and thumb nails are long and oval, naturally claw-like. The fingers and the thumb are tightly packed together unconsciously. Those that carry their hands this way, feel the need to be on defence, are coiled and ready to strike. Only the little finger may veer away slightly, If this is the case it’s exposing the need for freedom and resisting restriction in any kind of relationship. Their thumbs are heavy and high set, as is Jupiter finger, which often appears longer than normal, as seen here. Heart lines are high set and the hands are pale, white-grey and the lines are not easy to see, often being many lined hands. The girdle of Venus should be visible though. The life line will hug a narrow Venus mount, showing a private life, few friends and cold personality. The mounts in this hand are usually underdeveloped. I have never seen this hand type belonging to a man. They often have many whorl fingerprints, showing a perceptive but individualistic perspective. The Mercury finger will almost certainly be low set, but not short.

Egocentric hands think unconventionally and have little care for the needs of others, as the name might suggest. The Jupiter finger may be as long as the Saturn finger. (Make sure to measure the length of the finger rather against Saturn, as Jupiter can be lower set). If this is the case, beware the dominant, tyrannical power hungry nature within, as this suggests a superiority complex, a rare and troubling sign. This is true in the image above, particularly as the life and the head line are detached. This person will take risks on other people’s behalf, acting first, reflecting later, possibly. Afterall, they do not matter, they are not as important as they are!

As seen in the Intuitive and the Intellectual, the narrowness of the hands and Venus mount suggests a lacking of physical stamina and constitution.

There is an inability to give, to provide and care. The high set heart line and thumb ensure this person has only their interests at heart. The Egocentric hand is the type most likely to demand and resort to acts of controlling behaviour. They are dominating, oppressive, shrewd. They look to rule wherever they operate. If they rise to a position of power, which they often seek out, they will rule with an iron fist. Their absolute strength of their over inflated opinion of themselves usually serves them well in life, as those around them wish they had their confidence or bow down to them. Anyone who gets in their way will usually regret it one way or another. Especially if Inner Mars is as large as the Venus mount itself! If this is true they are likely to be aggressive, violent even. It is more likely they will convince another to work on their behalf however.

Though they may not be themselves able to, or willing to provide emotional or financial security, they will seek this out in others. They can be jealous, paranoid and highly secretive. They are mostly driven by greed, by a constant need to secure materials and assets or whatever they see as security. They do not make decent or loving parents, and like everything else in their lives, view them as pawns as part of the game of life where the aim to to acquire. Nothing is out of the question. They will sacrifice their reputation, friends and use others to get what they want. They were likely not born completely as Egocentric hands, their own parents having some hand in their own hand types. It is usually both nature and nurture that create us. There may well be some evidence of this in there hands. Look for a space at the base between the Jupiter and Saturn fingers, fraying at the beginning of the life line and for branches that reach from the heart line towards the life line for signs.

What the Egocentric does possess which others do not, is usually some sort of extra sensory instinct with which they were born with. If this is honed, they can to great effect, seemingly know what choice to make and when, to get the very best out of each situation.

Being so highly ambitious, the Egocentric is what many would consider a type A, a super achiever. Few are willing to do what they will to get ahead. They are fiercely motivated, sensible, excellent delegators, born leaders and highly tuned into their subconscious.

It is the most unfortunate of hand types by far and the source of their unhappiness is a direct result of a contradiction within. Should they fail to and choose not to see their own cruel nature, that they cannot take money to the grave, they will be doomed to be disliked, even hated by others. Allowing the Egocentric to understand that being vulnerable is not being weak, to see potential for dropping their guard and pursuing greater self understanding is the key to unlocking the positive aspects about their nature which lie dormant and hidden, locked away due to their persistent fear of losing. The Egocentric can be happy in life, even Scrooge had a happy ending, but it was only after he looked back and within, after he chose to give rather than take. So too may the Egocentric benefit from giving. If scrooge was real, his hand would have changed to an Intuitive, overnight. This is possible for the Egocentric hand.

Elementally, Egocentrics are like the Intellectual hand, Ice cold with a little Fire. Except to the Intellectual they sin, using their elements as destructive forces in life for material self gain, succumbing to greed. With great and disastrous effect, they shatter their opponents or ignite them from afar.

11. The Intuitive hand type in palm reading

intuitive hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Intuitive Hand in Palmistry

The first glance at this hand appear delicate and petite. These are Elegant and delicate hands and suggest a beautiful person inside and out, and all too often Intuitive hands are very beautiful people. The Intuitive hand is the second type of Psychic hand, and is very similar to the Egocentric, with the exceptions of its greater warmth and fragility. The palm is thin, soft and slender. The fingers too are thin and smooth and taper gently to conic or sometimes pointed end. The thumb is lower set and not as heavy, with the first phalanx of will shorter than logic. The Jupiter finger is not as long as seen in the Egocentric hand. The palm is pink, thin and warm and moist to the touch, appears white when pressed and has more springiness than the Egocentric hand. The nails are thin and often white. The lines in the palms are, like the Egocentric palm, difficult to see and usually white or pale. The Luna mount should be much more developed than on the Egocentric hand, showing intensity of, and greater imaginative thinking. The thin fingers explain a timid personality, a quiet disposition. If the thumb is also small and short, it shows meekness. Rarely will this person shout at another.

The palm may be warm, hot even and moist, indicating a fast metabolism. Intuitive hands are often thin and slender in physical stature, burning fat quickly.

Intuitive hands think and feel constantly with their entire being. This increased thinking is a sign of anxiety. There are often many lines on this palm as a result, making the palm reading more difficult and Sometimes, the lines are very faint like in this image. This is a potential sign of overuse of antibiotics, again signifying poor immune function. When I find this, I see it as a marking in itself, and rely more on the Chirognomy and Dermatoglyphics to conclude from.

Being attractive to the opposite sex is a double edged sword. Without adequate self worth, and proper parental guidance, Intuitive hands are the most liable to be exploited by predators and the worst of humanity. Early in life, they often become dancers or models, but these career roles often have an expiry date. They often have an exceptional gift and a liking for all things beautiful, fashion, art, nature, animals, music, poetry, film and theatre. Like the Sensual hand, they are heavily affected by all that might stir and influence emotions. They are the most likely to be psychically inclined and clairaudient of all the hand types and feel what others do around them. For this reason, they require positive people in their lives to maintain happiness. This innate awareness makes them superbly emotionally intelligent but life as an Intuitive hand is very difficult as they feel all the pain in the world. Expect to see loping sympathy and intuition lines on the Jupiter mount.

They often end up living alone, or with reduced social networks, making old age even more difficult. This is evident by a narrow Venus mount, with the lifeline hugging the Venus mount, as if uncertain about the world. It is all too common to see Intuitive hands becoming models or actors and being spat out by exploitative entertainment industries and then living a more solitary life with a small pack of rescued animals, safe from objectification and excess. Of all hand types, they are most likely to give to charity, despite their possible growing debts and will take in stray animals. This need to help others is often a way to heal the self, another feature found with this hand. The heart line often begins low on the palm, as opposed to the Egocentric hand, broadening the capacity to care, showing a need to give and help. If the Intuitive hand is not in some way providing on more than a superficial level, they will find another way in some other area in their lives. They’d make great vets if they were not so sensitive, to either the sight of blood or their own feelings getting in the way of required logic in a time of action. Intuitive hands make superb healers of all kinds. The are found in social care work, nursing and make incredible psychic mediums, psychic healers, tarot readers, animal therapists and reiki healers. They are happiest in these roles as well as the art industry, rather than entertainment, finding ways to influence change productively and with partners who are lovingly romantic, understanding and sympathetic but grounded and steady where they might not be at times. They are best suited to those with Practical, and Analytical hands, needing some broad handed earthy folk to nourish and in term, ground them. Their partners are often chosen for these qualities, they need someone with greater confidence to speak for them.

The Intuitive hand finds managing their emotions a challenge due to being so sensitive. They can be like sponges to feeling and are the most affected by all elements, being entirely Water. A great deal of horizontal lines riddling the palms are a sign of stressors. They unconsciously soak up all feelings and even thoughts from those around them, even the dead are not out of the question at times, and unless they can find a way to understand and control their deep and powerful senses, they may be at the mercy of them. Intuitive hands often have changeable moods because of this extreme fluidity of heart and soul. At worse, their intense feelings can be something they try to cope with by emotional eating, drug taking, replacing the act of sex for need to be loved, drinking and possibly even gambling. The Jupiter finger’s basal phalanx will show this, as seen in the image here. Abandonment issues are also common for this hand type, as they are in need of dependability, security and stability. (All elements that Water lacks.) An absent parent when young will likely create greater instability.

While not physically endowed, their strengths are many. They have powerful inherent abilities to read the feelings and even thoughts of others, they may instinctively know what a loved one is in trouble, or dream of events to occur, rarely do they foresee their own destiny. Gifts of this nature do not appear to work this way. An intuitive hand with a strong and clear intuition line has great potential to make a living using their extra sensory powers once harnessed. Training, practice and development in this is required if this is so. Darwin said the strength of a species lies in its ability to adapt.

This is their second gift. The sheer force of the Water element in this hand increases emotional and imaginative qualities and also allows for extra fluidity overall. Intuitive hands can flex and bend, literally and figuratively to the many changes that life throws at us better than most. Intuitive hands may have a habit of being over idealistic and get hurt by over expectations in notions too unrealistic and have mini meltdowns over small dramas. They are tuned into the future and are constant worriers, but if/when the tsunami finally comes, they are all too ready and calm, efficiently delegating and acting with confidence, while all others flounder around them, as if they alone have experienced the extinction event many times before.

They also have a tremendous strength of morality and will fight in their own way for what is right, despite the consequences. (The pen is mightier than the sword!) This is seen by the length and deep curve of the heart line, reaching far beyond the Saturn mount.

Intuitive hands inspire us with their own beauty, with paint brush and pen, with exceptional and moving performances of expression and dance, with poignant poetry and song. Water nourishes us by providing, by giving and healing but it can also saturate and suffocate us if over exposed.

Intuitive hands are liable to mental health issues, depression and anxiety and are also the most likely to take their own lives. Note the headline’s course, should this veer sharply into the unrealism and dark watery thoughts of over developed Luna, especially on the left hand, this is a concern. The prescription of happiness is in consistency of: expression of feeling through creative outlets, (cooking, artistic projects, dance, singing etc) yoga, meditation, walks in nature, a healthy clean diet and understanding the nature of one’s own psychology to mitigate from unhealthy coping mechanisms.

The intuitive hand is not nearly as materially focused as the Egocentric hand, and finds money falls through their fingers as quickly as it arrives. This can be seen by the gaps created from the knots sometimes seen between fingers.

Undue stress can cause a variety of health issues. This hand is not fortunate when it comes to vitality like other more wider handed folk. The Intuitive and the Egocentric hands are susceptible to lung and throat issues, chest infections, anaemia, (check the whiteness of the nails) asthma and poor spinal health throughout their lives. For this hand type, exercise and clean living is not usually a priority to them, but is a requirement to keep these predispositions at bay. The fate line acts as a gauge for spinal health, If this appears jarred with sharp angles, expect back problems.

12. The Composite hand type in palm reading

composite hand type in a palmistry hand classification method
The Composite Hand in Palmistry

There will be times when the hand does not conform to any one hand type and displays many, or even all of the elements. When this happens, there is no security in relying on a hand type and in truth, it is uncommon to find someone who fits any one hand type precisely.

When you come across the Composite hand, you must look at all that stands out, and mark it on your proverbial cork board and come back to it later.

You must disregard the hand types once you are certain enough they do not fit any hand type and discover all that you can in terms of Chirognomy first.

Ask yourself, what is this palm trying to tell me? Often the hand displays a unique message because you have met a unique personality type, and so the hand speaks a unique language.

In the image above, little about the hand is certain so take note!

Composite hands are what Cheiro would have classified as his mixed 7th hand. They are adaptable and find a way to get on with just about anyone. They will likely have loops in abundance on their fingertips, with perhaps a whorl or peacock’s eye on the Apollo or Jupiter fingers.

Composite hands will be awkward, difficult and mixed. The personality will be complicated, sharing varieties from several other hand types. The fact they are unique in personality is a sign in itself, that the person themselves do not feel they fit in or conform to any one place. They may be an oddball, social chameleons, and likely didn’t know which crowd to hang out with in school, perhaps they shifted form group to group, in search of finding themselves. There may still be an element of lacking in self understanding. Reassure them that they have come to the right person to remedy this!

The size and strength of the thumb in conjunction with the length and depth of the lines will show if they are able to consolidate their many eclectic talents and traits into a productive path in life or not.

You may find one finger tip square, while two are rounded and another is spatulate. The fingers may appear to not look as though they belong to the hand in some way. Some may be smooth, while others are knotted. Nail types may also be mixed. When this occurs, look at what each aspect of the finger’s psyche is telling you.

You may find one strong angle on the palm while the rest is rounded.

Once you have derived all you can from the Chirognomy, look to the Dermatoglyphics and again take note of all that stands out.

Are there any specific skin ridge patterns? Are there any apexes that sit out of place?

There may be angles as well as curves, toughness as well as softness. Look at the unique aspects of the palm and let these features guide you.

Then look at the Chirology. Again, what stands out to you? There will be signs once understood can be cross referenced and concluded from together.

Composite hands will make for a more complex reading and test all your abilities as a palmist. You must use all your skills and knowledge as well as your intuition. The greatest mysteries require the best detectives. You will need both logic and intuition, or a great deal of one or the other. There is no safety net with these hand types so don’t be afraid to ask a question or two. Sometimes we need to ask a question to begin discovering answers. If you are uncertain about something, do not say it, wait until something else in the palm corroborates this. Never conclude from one sign alone, especially with the Composite hand.
