It is with great respect that I credit my mentor's mentor for what you're about to read. What follows is my own reworking of David Brandon-Jones' method of classifying the hands, detailed in his book Practical Palmistry. I've injected my own observations throughout, and I refer often to the 4 elements as a way of tying the two classification systems together, building on what's already established rather than replacing it.

The Goal of Hand Type Classification in Palm Reading
The aim of this piece is to equip you with the greatest tool available at arguably the most important stage of hand analysis: classifying the hand type. Palm reading is both a science and an art, logic and intuition together. Every great detective trusts their hunches, but they're also highly rational. Where we begin the process matters, and like any science, there should be a formula.
The first step should always be classifying the hand type. This is known as Chirognomy. Many palmists have their own methods, and some work entirely intuitively, with little care for classification at all, each to their own. This particular method draws on the largest pool of known hand types I'm aware of, and in my opinion, the more hand types at your disposal, the more accurate your conclusions will be.
The Already Known Methods: The 4 Elements
Many palmists use just 4 hand types, tied to the 4 elements. It's a good starting point, popularised by Fred Gettings as a way of introducing beginners to the subject, but it's too vague on its own to draw specific conclusions from. If you wanted to learn to drive, you're better off in a car than a go-kart. Still, there's real substance in the 4-element method, and I fold a good deal of that theory back into the 12-type system for context. The 5th Element
In South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and China, a 5th element is added to this table: Ether, sometimes called Chi or Qi, meaning energy or life itself. This method uses more of the hand, assigning elements to the fingers and the often-overlooked thumb. Some systems extend this further still, assigning elements to the lines themselves. There's merit in all of it, and no reason not to study more than one school of thought.
The 6 Hand Types (Plus a Mixed 7th)
Probably the best-known method is the 6 hand types with a mixed 7th, used by d'Arpentigny and Desbarrolles, and made famous by Cheiro. There's a great deal of substance here, though it requires some revision, the three men behind it were aristocracy, and it shows. The "elementary" hand, for instance, was described as brutish, with insufficient intellect. What we understand today is that there are many kinds of intelligence. The elementary hand often carries a physical intelligence that few others do, and every hand type carries skills the others simply don't.
An Overlooked Method: Muchery's 8
Georges Muchery devised an 8-type classification that never took off, which is a shame, because I think it has stronger bones than anything mentioned so far. Muchery incorporated the planets already assigned to the mounts by medieval palmists into his hand types, creating something genuinely coherent.
For example, someone with a long Apollo (ring) finger and a well-developed Apollo mount would be described as an Apollonian: artistic, playful, experimental. This method also weighed the size of each mount against the leanings of the fingers, giving us Mercurians, Jupiterians, Saturnians, Martians, Lunarians, and so on.
Unfortunately, classifying people by the planets in their hands never caught on, despite the solid foundation it had, likely because palmistry was already moving away from medieval frameworks by the time Muchery published. I think this method deserved to be built on.
The 12 Hand Type Classification Method
What follows is the most in-depth and expansive model of hand classification I know of. Each type is labelled as Brandon-Jones described it, with my own thoughts and the 4-element framework woven in for clarity. The twelve types are:
primary hand type

1. The Primary hand type in palm reading
The Primary hand is broad, rough, and built for endurance. It symbolises grounded, physical expression and traditional loyalty, these hands speak through action rather than words. Often mistaken for rigid or simple, they're in fact deeply skilled and form the world's physical backbone. When provoked, they can erupt like a volcano, but at heart they're mountains of integrity.
These hands are rough-textured, often cold to the touch. The palm is almost as broad as it is long, and the fingers and thumb are chunky, short, and stubby, sometimes square at the tip as well as the palm, which creates an especially regimented individual. There will be few lines on the palm, often short ones, reflecting the simplicity of this person's needs and nature. The mount of Luna is usually underdeveloped, with Venus and inner Mars compensating instead. The shortness of the fingers reveals action over thought.
Primary hands express themselves in a very pure, physical form. They don't use body language well, nor vocalise their thoughts with much vocabulary. Instead they express through their work: crafting, repairing, refurbishing, shouting, breaking things, sex, fighting, sport. These hands can look stiff and cumbersome, but don't be fooled, the Primary is far more skilled with their hands than most. Look for an angle at the back of the thumb, a sign of proficiency in timing and trade skills. Many with wide, short hands have a tremendous ability and speed in their fingers, giving efficient, uncomplaining effort to laborious industries. Without such hands, fundamental industries would fail.
Primary hands are followers rather than leaders, with little inclination to decide for themselves, let alone others. The earthy nature of the palm ties this person to grounded, practical, physical work. Unless unusually lazy, they enjoy being useful, and they relate best to what doesn't move or change: integrity, rules, loyalty, the ground itself. This is why they don't tend to socialise much with those drawn to airier or watery notions like philosophy or dance. They often fall into working with the earth itself, or trades, roadwork, or a devout service high in principle, like the military or caring professions. They're a mountain by nature, a volcano at worst: predictable, stoic, and stubborn.
They can endure more physically than most hand types, but challenging their unmovable principles may cause them to erupt, and once they do, no one can stop them. This is why it matters to let the Primary feel heard and allow them to vent, especially when faced with unsettling change or an insult to themselves or someone they love. It lets off the steam they need to resume being the steady presence they enjoy being. (Check the thumb, if it's balloon-shaped with an enlarged, bulbous tip, this is worth noting for everyone's safety.) Otherwise, they tend not to suffer stress the way other hand types do. Stone is the least affected by the other elements.
Primary hands make superb employees and friends. If their aggressive side surfaces, it's usually through provocation rather than premeditation, and once they've released their feelings, they give the incident little further thought.
There's little planning ahead here, especially if the fingertips are rounded. They live entirely in the moment, preferring physical experience over itineraries, a low-key festival they'll rough out until the money runs out, rather than a carefully planned holiday. It's for the best if someone else handles the money, pensions, bills, and admin. At their worst, a Primary might spend everything in the pub in one night, get into a fight, and start over the next day. At their best, they're hardworking, considerate, and deeply loyal to a select few. Lacking imagination works in their favour here too, as they rarely picture what might go wrong, and rarely become anxious for the same reason. Their timing and reflexes tend to keep them safe rather than foresight or caution.
Primary hands are among the hardiest of us, respecting the laws of nature and survival. They're as wild as any beast at heart, but in sync, in harmony, when living in their natural rhythm.
2. The Useful hand type in palm reading
The Useful hand shares much with the Primary, broad palm, short fingers, rugged texture, thriving in practical, structured environments. Though it can appear blunt or stiff, this hand is deceptively capable, hardworking, and steadfast, the backbone of labour, service, and devotion.
The resemblance to the Primary is close, but there's more development around the mount of Luna, and the Jupiter finger is often short, suggesting high testosterone and a possible inferiority complex. The fingers and thumb are longer and more rounded than the Primary's, allowing a little more thought before action. The lines are still few, but softer and longer than the Primary's straighter ones, showing more sensitivity and the capacity to imagine, to ask "what if?"
Nails on the Useful hand are often wide and bitten short, a sign of self-criticism and a short temper. To the touch, this hand has more elasticity and warmth than the Primary, a smoother feel.
The Useful hand has some access to creative expression, chairs, pottery, sculpture, and pours a surprising amount of hidden emotion into these masterful, practical creations. Verbalising thoughts and feelings is a struggle, somewhat eased if the Jupiter or Mercury fingers form a point. Otherwise, attempts to put feelings into words can cause real communication trouble. The Useful hand excels at showing rather than telling, and teaches best this way. They're often refreshingly genuine, "what you see is what you get," capable of deceit but not very good at it, and when caught, a shrug says it all.
Helping a Useful hand open up emotionally works best through a subject they already know and love, suddenly the words come easily. From there, weaving in emotive questions while staying on topic can help. A gifted carpenter with a Useful hand might struggle to talk about their anger directly, but asked how anger might look carved into wood, they can articulate a great deal. For the Useful hand, working with their hands is often the answer, as it is for the Primary.
Like the Primary, the Useful hand has little patience for abstract ideas about the future, or pointless ceremony. They're drawn to working-class company over the idea of a city shopping trip or a formal ballroom dance, which sounds like hell to them. Food, yes, but the mutual, universal language of shared experience is what they speak, especially if a travel or "escape" line is present. The Useful hand gets along with most people, provided that shared ground is there.
Emotional articulation is this hand's biggest obstacle, especially with a low-set Mercury finger. They're on the cusp of being able to speak their thoughts but held back by their own design, which can create an inner contradiction: complex emotion with no outlet, unless one is found. Understanding and managing that frustration is the key to unlocking real expression.
Beneath a cool, calm exterior, Useful hands carry a complex swirl of emotion. They're often misjudged for this, they understand feelings well but struggle to speak the language back, like someone mute in a world of the blind.
Like the Primary, they feel close to nature's laws and respect strength, so opening up can feel like exposing themselves to attack. This can make them appear unfeeling or rough when they're really just guarding themselves. They do have a slightly greater capacity to reason than the Primary, shown by a longer, more sloping headline. But if powerful emotions go unmanaged and unreleased, physical issues linked to that tension can follow, especially around grief, if this person was never taught that tears aren't weakness.
There's a strongly Earth element here, sometimes paired with another, the need to stay grounded but also to transform. This tension makes the Useful hand hard to read at times. They may search for answers externally to make peace with their own complexity; leaning into one element more fully is often the way through. Their partner needs patience, forgiveness, and understanding of these internal knots, sensitive enough to reach them but resilient enough not to be hurt by occasional harshness. Useful hands often prefer being teased over praised, unless their ego is especially fragile, since praise can feel disingenuous and their own achievements rarely feel like enough. Learning how much their efforts genuinely inspire others is an important lesson for this hand. Like the Primary, they're often our natural physical artists, devoted entirely to whatever cause or person they believe in, loyal to the end, sometimes in spite of themselves.
3. The Energetic hand type in palm reading
This is the hand that reaches out without fear, fingers seeming unstoppable in their effort to take on all the world offers, from cradle to grave. The Luna mount hangs low and large, and the rising Jupiter mount gives the palm a slightly triangular shape. The thumb is long, as are the heavy, spade-like fingers, increasing both the capacity to think and the will to act. Very long fingers slow down information processing, creating deeper analysis, while heavily rounded fingertips show a need to know things right now.
Increased potential for a high IQ shows in a longer Mercury finger combined with the headline. Nails often fan outward like a kitchen spatula, which is where "spatulate" fingers get their name, standing for outward-splaying energy, like a geyser. A large Apollo tip shows both tremendous action and a deep appreciation for natural beauty. The palm's surface is softer here than in the previous types. The life line often arcs confidently outward toward Luna (travel), enlarging the Venus mount, courage seen in the willingness to take life into the unknown. A well-developed Venus mount adds vitality and charisma.
The skin is usually resilient and springy, full of enthusiasm and a zest for life. Harder skin can obstruct this natural force; softer skin lets that energy expend itself more freely. Moisture in the palm indicates metabolic rate, usually high here.
A widened lower palm increases material and physical needs and abilities, drawing this person toward exploration, reinvention, and constant challenge, they're pioneers, ready to challenge others too. A wider upper palm shifts the value toward emotional and spiritual pursuits, wellness, religious, or social work.
It's essential the Energetic hand learns to understand their own body, since they run at full throttle daily and risk burning out, especially if the life and head lines are separated (perception detached from reality). Vertical lines across every phalange can signal glandular issues like adrenal burnout. Energetic and Dynamic hands are most at risk of this. They're happiest in motion, doing something, anything, and need a focus to channel their force. This often means they discover their talents and play to their strengths earlier than most.
Energetic hands tend toward record-breaking, exploration, travel. They crave challenge and revel in the hunt for a new one. Bitten nails here can signal frustration from wasted passion and talent, worth gently addressing, especially if the second phalanx of Apollo is wasted.
They need satisfaction through effort and action, achievement for its own sake matters less than the process of achieving. Nothing appeals more than beating the odds. As partners, Energetic hands are fascinating but need a partner who understands that confinement is torture to them, especially with a Mercury finger that leans away from the hand. Their partner may need to accept long stretches of silence during some far-flung adventure and share, or at least deeply understand, that need for challenge.
Energetic hands draw their force from a mix of elements, mostly Air, with Water and Fire present too, each constantly shifting against the other. Air creates the thirst for knowledge and new ideas, Water the dream, Fire the physical drive to act on it. The cycle repeats, changing this person a little each time, which can create relationship strain if they haven't found the right partner, or if they change so much they become someone else entirely. Without greater self-understanding by midlife, this can tip into what's traditionally called a midlife crisis. As Einstein put it: "Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, rather it can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another."
4. The Dynamic hand type in palm reading
There's nothing conventional about the Dynamic hand. In my experience it shows up more often in women than men, though I wouldn't assume it's exclusive to either. It's easily spotted by its triangular shape: a high-set Jupiter mount and a narrowing base where palm meets wrist. The Luna mount is often underdeveloped while Mercury is strong, widening the upper palm. Like the Energetic hand, the fingers splay outward with confidence but are knottier. The Jupiter finger often leans toward the thumb, showing a desire to shape the world around them. The thumb may be heavy and high-set, spatulate or conic. Like the Energetic hand, this palm is moist and springy, showing a high metabolic rate. The lines are often numerous, long, curved, deeply marked, and often islanded, hinting at anxiety.
The widened upper palm heightens the emotional and spiritual realms, sometimes knocking this person's balance off if the heart and head lines merge, or if the life and head lines separate, since perception then isn't as tethered to reality, creating impatience and impulsivity.
Because the physical and material aren't as prominent here, the Dynamic hand places its value on the Saturnian and Jupiterian: family, ethics, spirituality, relationships, integrity, ambition, judgement, feeling, others and self. Where they sit between those two is their life lesson. They have less physical constitution and less interest in material or academic pursuits, but greater faith and belief, and their efforts almost always aim at helping others. There's an inherent sense that if they can just get over the next mountain, everything will be fine. The Dynamic hand often bypasses its own bodily needs to chase its goals, risking adrenal burnout, but its mental resilience is considerable, no one holds up better under mental strain than this hand type.
Because their overall physicality is reduced, so are their physical needs, sex isn't usually a priority in relationships, emotional connection is. This can make their expectations of others a little unrealistic. The heart line is usually deeply marked, curving gently, often reaching toward the Jupiter mount (high idealism), or ending cleanly between Jupiter and Saturn (a strong, clear moral compass). Many Dynamic hands would be content with one deep, lifelong connection, so long as it stays meaningful.
A partner needs to be similarly strong but relaxed, understanding, and an excellent communicator, to help balance the Dynamic hand's more chaotic inner life. Dynamic hands are natural leaders, dominant and highly ambitious, and they respect in others what they value in themselves. They can feel defensive around equally strong personalities, which means many remain single, finding relationships more trouble than they're worth, however lonely that can be. The heavier the thumb, the greater the likelihood of relationship friction.
They may not prioritise relationships at all, being in a constant state of overdrive, workaholics who need reminding to look after their bodies and basic needs alongside their work. An equal balance of logic and will in the thumb is ideal here.
Careers often fall into roles of providing: teaching, caring, risk assessment, social work, nursing, catering, or a creative field where their strong feelings and personality find an outlet. Whatever they do, the underlying purpose is to better others' lives. Dynamic hands are resourceful and hardworking, natural leaders who can be criticised for being overbearing or bossy if not given the space to lead.
Support in becoming more emotionally articulate is often needed, especially with a low-set Mercury finger, which points to deeper insecurity beneath the confidence.
The Dynamic hand risks repeating its own mistakes unless it learns from them, and can display real frustration, anxiety, and a kind of stuck-loop behaviour, repeating the same actions and hoping for a different result. Support in recognising this is valuable, though their partner may not be the right person to point it out.
Air dominates here, with Fire close behind: powerfully logical, practical, motivated, but capable of real friction when erratic, whirlwinds at best, fire tornadoes at worst. They challenge others' ideas readily and create fast change where others wouldn't know where to start. Able, self-reliant, and very much their own person.
5. The Practical hand type in palm reading
Like the Primary, the square palm here represents dependability and grounded logic. The thumb is usually fairly heavy and long. The more angular the hand, the more order, rigidity, and attention to timing applies. The Practical hand has a square palm with medium-length fingers, often square-tipped, though a more rounded tip softens the rigidity and adds spontaneity in a crisis. The Jupiter finger is usually short, showing high testosterone and a modest ego, much like the Primary. Lines are few and sit higher on the palm, with the exception of a longer heart line than the Primary's, showing a stronger sense of idealism and civic purpose. This hand carries a strong code of conduct.
Normally the head and life lines are tightly joined here, showing caution and conventional thinking. If detached, it shows a more unorthodox, resourceful approach to problem-solving.
This hand feels secure and safe, the kind you'd trust to keep you safe too. Its squareness, like the Primary or Useful, signals truth, order, and loyalty, squares in palmistry generally offer protection. This is the hand of a construction site manager, someone who understands everyone's place and respects it. Good employers and employees alike come from this shape. Whatever they do, they look to construct, repair, or maintain, and they make excellent builders.
Practical hands hold traditional values and work best with their hands. They believe in rules, order, and the law, hierarchy matters to them because if the systems they've invested in collapsed, so might they. Right and wrong are a fixed compass here. If a recipe is altered even slightly, it becomes, in their mind, a different recipe entirely, and improvisation doesn't come naturally.
Working with their hands brings real satisfaction, especially with two or more square fingertips, otherwise a service built on integrity, policing, caring, will do just as well. Asking a Practical hand to make snap decisions without a manual isn't ideal, they're not naturally inventive or egotistical, and don't see it as their place to improvise; they follow rather than lead, even as employers, where they'll follow legislation to the letter to do right by their staff.
They respect those who respect the rules everyone else has had to follow, since it builds mutual trust. With such a clear sense of boundaries, they avoid inappropriate entanglements and stay impartial when weighing facts. Quotes will be careful, work will be precise, exactly as the rulebook says it should be.
Conformity can tip into rigidity that bores others around them, especially the squarer this hand is. Not natural romantics, they may struggle to find a partner willing to accept their inflexibility, though the better approach is for a partner to share their core values rather than try to change them. Water can soften the earth just enough to allow change, but it must serve the person's benefit. A partner with an Analytical hand, or a slightly longer-handed, sympathetic Practical hand, can help nudge this person toward gentle growth, a little at a time. Too much water, and there's a flood, this hand needs room to breathe.
6. The Analytical hand type in palm reading
This palm is long, as are the fingers, which carry analytical knots that slow processing further, creating deeper thought. The longer the fingers, the more logical and analytical this person is. A longer thumb enhances thinking further and channels thought into action, the skillset of a writer. The extra length in the palm increases capacity for thought, imagination, and reason, as the mental mounts stretch out. Because of this length, the head and life lines are more likely to separate here, distancing perception from reality and placing less value on the physical and material. A wider gap means more unorthodox thinking, but also more impatience.
The palm often has a slight concave curve, showing social flexibility, with right angles at the edges like the Practical or Useful hand, adding a touch of practicality. Skin can run cold, grey to pink. The thumb is long and low-set, a sign of a devoted reader and a humanitarian streak. Analytical hands are almost always avid absorbers of information. If the thumb opens to a full ninety degrees, it shows real openness and a thirst for knowledge. The second phalanx of the thumb is often longer than the first, as logic wins out here. An angle at the back of the thumb suggests good timing and manual dexterity, sometimes musical ability. Longer hands correlate with a higher chance of lower spinal issues. Anxiety often shows up here too, especially with a heavily lined palm.
This hand tends to be introverted, drawn to scholarship, teaching, and academia. The length of the fingers reflects a need to sift and fine-comb through detail, useful for data analysis, forecasting, or spotting patterns others miss, particularly with long second phalanges. They take real satisfaction in catching and correcting mistakes, more so the knottier the fingers. The longer the fingers, the greater the thinking capacity but the slower the physical follow-through, a Dynamic or Useful hand might finish assembling flat-pack furniture while the Analytical hand is still reading the instructions carefully. Where a Useful or Primary hand thrives in routine, hands-on work, the Analytical hand would struggle there and do better running diagnostics on the machinery instead. Because they absorb so much from their surroundings, Analytical hands can be prone to overstimulation and sensory sensitivity.
They make excellent conversationalists: good listeners, reasoners, debaters, more interested in discovering what's correct than in being right themselves. A well-developed Luna mount adds an imaginative streak, and more conic fingertips bring flexibility of opinion and a more creative, less rigid personality than the squarer-tipped version of this hand. That said, a concave palm, wasting at the second phalanx of the thumb, and conic fingertips together can leave this hand a little weak at standing up for its own beliefs, creating friction between a love of order and a pull toward more chaotic, fun-loving instincts. Adjusting their routines from time to time tends to help.
Knotty knuckles often give this hand a slightly nerdy, goofy quality, which can read as endearing or irritating depending on who's looking.
Analytical hands lean toward planning, statistics, and tactics, or, with conic fingers and a developed Luna mount, toward music, architecture, and nature. Ignorance may be bliss, but this hand type is often keenly, sometimes painfully, self-aware, and confidence can be a real obstacle, especially with thin fingers relative to the palm, particularly a thin Mercury finger, and a short Jupiter finger pointing to an underlying inferiority complex. They may present as confident while quietly feeling they haven't done enough, endlessly resetting their own bar for success. A longer Jupiter finger can mean they eventually rise into an employer's role.
A partner needs to actively encourage change, adventure, and fun, since energy for its own sake is often missing from this person's life. Analytical hands often carry an "escape line," reflecting an intense need to learn, explore, and understand, some travel early in life, others much later, particularly if they've ignored that pull for too long. Real happiness tends to come once this hand has honestly and impartially taken stock of its own character. Once they understand how and why they work the way they do, a great deal becomes possible.
This hand's element is Water, through and through, and benefits from a partner with a broader mix of elements, an Energetic or Dynamic hand suits well, bringing the encouragement and stimulation this hand needs.
7. The Intellectual hand type in palm reading
These hands are long, bony, slender, taut, and angular. Fingers run medium to long, heavily knotted, tapering to a conic or pointed tip. The thumb sits low, wide at the first phalanx, ending in a delicate point. The palm depresses slightly at the centre and can have a slightly sallow look. Nails run long with a faint yellow tint, and the lines tumble across the surface with a kind of inevitability.
This hand is genuinely uncommon, and its owners tend to be self-isolating by nature. A very long Saturn finger, with some space between Saturn and Apollo on the left hand, often points to a solitary streak. The life line usually hugs the Venus mount closely, reducing this person's social circle, and the fun that comes with it. The Intellectual hand prefers the company of books to people, quiet contemplation over the noise of the crowd. Books don't try to hurt, dominate, or steal, they hold knowledge and speak in a language this hand understands. They may write themselves, not for profit or recognition, but to preserve knowledge. In older palmistry language, these would have been called "philosophic" hands: monks, scribes, those drawn to solitude and quiet enlightenment rather than followers or numbers on a screen.
They're largely unaffected by what rattles most people, calm, neutral, impartial. Others might read them as cold or cynical, but it matters little to this hand what others think. They're often articulate, able to say exactly what they mean and get straight to the heart of a matter.
Relationships and material concerns come last. Fewer opportunities tend to come their way, given how much time they spend observing from the sidelines, and their firm positions on things can isolate them further. There's often a strong moral undercurrent here, a willingness to forgo pleasure in service of something greater, though not every Intellectual hand starts out this way; some taste more of life first, only to step back from it later, having found it left a bitter taste. Many carry a fate line with roots reaching from Neptune, hinting at early struggle followed by slow, steady achievement.
They can be rather self-focused, even self-absorbed at times, their warmth runs lower than their sense of piety and prudence, and the Saturn mount often sits higher on the palm as a result. The heart line tends to run straight and high-set, which can come across as cold.
Elementally this hand is icy water with a touch of fire, a duality that makes it a slightly uncomfortable social fit in both friendship and romance. Even offering help isn't easy here, since their instinctive reaction can come across as defensive. Partnerships are rare for this hand, by their own choice as much as others', they lean toward solitude over companionship, sometimes seeming almost asexual in temperament, a little apart from the usual social current.
Intellectual hands often act as the moral compass of the people around them, quick to spot others' flaws while being slower to see their own, despite their self-focus. They stand somewhat outside society, guided by something older and less of this moment, walking their own difficult road toward whatever they consider enlightenment.
8. The Sensual hand type in palm reading
The near-opposite of the Intellectual hand in both look and nature. This palm is soft, rounded, conic in shape, moist to the touch, with reduced springiness. The fingers have widened basal phalanges, showing the importance of physical needs, sometimes tapering to a conic or pointed tip that heightens the need for satisfaction in the here and now. The thumb is usually heavy, conic, high-set, and bends back slightly at the tip, with a large mount of Venus at its base. Unlike the Intellectual palm, this one is thick, without a central depression, and longer than its fingers, somewhere between a square and a rectangle. Lines run long, sometimes pale, often heavily islanded, particularly the heart line.
At a glance this might look like the hand of someone overweight, but the Sensual hand's conic build shows up on people who are neither underweight nor obese.
The widened phalanges partly explain this hand's name, it's almost always seeking to satisfy and gratify. These are the hedonists among us, people who love life's pleasures and bring the party with them. They enjoy hosting, cinema nights, theme parks, big meals, and gaming with friends, always planning the next outing, provided it doesn't demand too much exertion.
Sex, music, film, food, drugs, and alcohol, the Sensual hand knows exactly what it likes, and as a result understands what other people like too. They tend to make excellent connoisseurs, entrepreneurs, and creatives, often rising to the top of entertainment or hospitality industries. Their hands are as full-bodied as their personalities, usually paired with a strong sense of humour and a wide social circle, visible in the arc of the life line and the size of the Venus mount.
At worst, this hand can give in too easily to its own appetites, particularly with shorter fingers, a detached head and life line, and a life line that widens noticeably as it arcs. Generosity tends to run high here too, this hand likes to share the joy it feels.
Obesity is a fairly common physical trait, though not always tied to appetite alone; it's worth checking the skin at the centre of the palm for dryness or coarseness, sometimes linked to thyroid activity, and worth mentioning gently to a doctor rather than treating as a diagnosis. A wider, heavily islanded heart line can sometimes point toward circulatory strain, and it's worth encouraging anyone with this hand type and health concerns to get it properly checked rather than relying on the hand alone.
The lack of a central concave here suggests reduced energy reserves, so this hand needs regular replenishing and tires more easily than it might expect when relying on stamina for a demanding task, best paired with the occasional power nap.
Being stranded on a desert island with a Sensual hand wouldn't do much for you, but you'd do a great deal for them, they'll have the ideas and even the nerve to delegate, but not always the drive to get their own hands dirty. Wonderful company though, and often full of genuinely brilliant solutions when you need them.
The more conic the fingers, the more creative energy this hand carries, especially with a gently curving headline reaching toward Luna. A partner who can bring the physical follow-through to match their ideas, a Practical or Useful hand, works well here, helping this person see their ideas through while gently encouraging healthier habits. Sensual hands do best with structure and dependability around them, often ambitious dreamers who need a team beneath them to make things happen. A balanced thumb helps keep all of this in check.
This hand can seem hugely motivated at first, only to lose that spark before long, for reasons even they can't quite explain, their moods and follow-through shift easily.
Sensual hands are inspired by everything that emotes: poetry, song, art, dance, theatre, food, a good story well told.
Elementally, this is mostly Earth with a touch of Fire, slow to change, grounded physically and materially, but fluid and encouraging in personality, able to inspire others into action even if they rarely move themselves.
9. The Lively hand type in palm reading
The Lively hand sits somewhere between the Dynamic, Egocentric, and Sensual hands, carrying a little of all three. Well-developed basal phalanges leave less space between the fingers, which improves the chances of accumulating wealth. Soft curves run throughout, with a springy resilience that suggests strong creative energy. The palm is rounded, slightly longer than square, thicker than average but not as thick as the Sensual hand. The inner Mars mount is often raised and prominent. Fingers and thumb taper to conic or rounded tips, and the thickness of the fingers gives this hand a certain bluntness, a no-nonsense edge. The thumb bends slightly, is strong and low-to-medium set, and the lines run long, deep, and gently sloped.
The palm's springiness is itself a marker of a lively character. This hand often belongs to genuinely funny, likeable people, sometimes with a loop of humour visible in the skin ridge pattern between Mercury and Apollo. Conic fingers here mean ideas flow easily and are then acted on through the strength of a powerful thumb.
This is a fairly rare hand type overall. It's emotionally driven to action, clever, with a long Mercury finger and headline, good with money, and cunning. In my experience there's always some streak of manipulation here, for better or worse.
At its best, this hand rises into positions that reform broken systems and better people's lives while entertaining as it goes. At its worst, it manipulates partners and others unpredictably, sometimes exploitatively. The Mercury finger tends to show which way this leans. Lively hands are unpredictable in general, often pushing ideas others find radical or impractical, thriving on change and movement. Practical, Useful, and Primary hands often find themselves working underneath a Lively hand, and occasionally frustrated by its shifting plans. For this hand, it's better to try and fail than never to have tried, and repeating the same routine feels like stagnation. Structure that suits square-palmed types clashes with this hand's constant motion; it would rather see a little chaos than order. A thumb tapering to a point suggests expensive, refined tastes, good at acquiring things, just as quick to spend on them.
Like the Sensual hand, the Lively hand can give in easily to its desires, but it has the drive to actually chase them, especially with a well-developed inner Mars mount.
Depending on their moral compass, a Lively hand stuck in a stagnant relationship might compensate through an affair or a secretive second pursuit. They know their own worth and won't hesitate to move on, in love or career, the moment things feel slow, craving excitement through change. A partner needs to understand this and be willing to bring some spice and novelty into the relationship themselves.
This hand is the most likely of all the types to spin a hobby into a full side venture almost by accident, then sell it on rather than let it grow dull, keeping a few shares rather than staying tied to something that's stopped exciting them.
Lively hands can be somewhat prone to low moods, feeling things deeply but struggling to properly process those feelings given how quick their mind moves on, which can leave grief or disappointment unresolved beneath the surface.
Careers that suit: anything driven by ethical motivation, quick thinking, and problem-solving, house-flipping, acting, social care, health services, even something as unconventional as intelligence work. They need challenge and change in equal measure.
Elementally, this hand leans Fire with some Water, the same elements as the Intellectual hand, but reversed in proportion. Warm-hearted, needing just a little fuel to keep burning, capable of making real drama in public when required, because they see themselves as powerful agents of change, destructive at times in word and deed, but full of creative, adaptable force, provided they give themselves the time to use it well.
10. The Egocentric hand type in palm reading
There are, in the old 19th-century sevenfold classification, two distinct "psychic" hand types, and this is the rarer, and thankfully so, of the two. It isn't always easy to tell apart from the Intuitive hand at first glance, but this one runs cold and hard to the touch, with little give in the fingers or palm under pressure. The fingers sit at roughly seven-eighths the length of the palm, tapering to a conic or pointed tip. Nails on both fingers and thumb run long and oval, almost claw-like. The fingers and thumb are held tightly together, unconsciously defensive, as though poised to strike. If the little finger veers away slightly, it signals a need for freedom and a resistance to restriction in relationships. The thumb is heavy and high-set, as is the Jupiter finger, often longer than typical. Heart lines sit high, the skin runs pale, white-grey, and the lines can be hard to make out despite there often being many of them. The girdle of Venus is usually visible. The life line hugs a narrow Venus mount, pointing to a private, guarded life with few close friendships. The mounts overall tend to be underdeveloped. Many whorl fingerprints often appear here, showing a perceptive but highly individualistic outlook, and the Mercury finger is almost always low-set, though not necessarily short. In my experience, this hand type turns up in women far more often than men, though I wouldn't claim it belongs to one exclusively.
This hand tends to think unconventionally and carries little natural concern for the needs of others. If the Jupiter finger runs as long as the Saturn finger (measure carefully, as Jupiter can sit lower on the hand), be cautious of a dominant, power-hungry streak, a real and troubling superiority complex. This is especially worth watching if the life and head lines are also detached, since this person may act first and reflect, if at all, only afterward.
As with the Intuitive and Intellectual hands, the narrowness of the palm and Venus mount points to lower physical stamina and constitution.
There's often a real difficulty here in giving, providing, or caring for others. The high-set heart line and thumb suggest someone whose own interests come first, and this hand type is the most likely of all twelve to lean toward controlling behaviour. Dominating, shrewd, inclined to rule wherever they find themselves, and if they reach real power, they tend to wield it firmly. Their outsized self-belief often works in their favour, since people around them either envy that confidence or defer to it, and crossing this person rarely goes unanswered, especially if the inner Mars mount is as developed as Venus, which can point to a genuinely aggressive streak. More often, though, they'll persuade someone else to act on their behalf rather than act themselves.
They may seek emotional or financial security from others without being willing or able to offer it themselves. Jealousy, secrecy, and a strong drive to acquire, security in whatever form that takes for them, tend to run through this hand. Parenting doesn't come naturally, and like everything else, relationships can be approached as something to be managed for advantage rather than nurtured. It's worth remembering that no one starts out purely as this hand type; their own upbringing likely played a part, and there may be signs of that in the hand too, a gap between the Jupiter and Saturn fingers at the base, fraying at the start of the life line, or branches reaching from the heart line toward the life line.
What this hand does have, which others often lack, is a strong extrasensory instinct. Properly developed, it can help this person read situations and timing with real precision.
Being so ambitious, this is very much a "type A," high-achieving hand. Few are willing to do what this person will to get ahead, fiercely motivated, an excellent delegator, a natural leader, and deeply attuned to their own subconscious.
It's arguably the most difficult hand type to carry well, and the source of its unhappiness is usually an internal contradiction: unless this person can see their own harder edges clearly, understand that nothing material follows them forever, they risk ending up disliked, even resented. Helping the Egocentric hand see that vulnerability isn't weakness, that there's real strength waiting on the other side of dropping the guard, is the key to unlocking what's genuinely good in this hand's nature, currently kept locked away by a fear of losing. Change is absolutely possible here, even the most famously hard-hearted fictional miser gets a happy ending, but only once he looks inward and chooses to give rather than take.
Elementally, this hand mirrors the Intellectual, icy water with a touch of fire, but where the Intellectual withdraws, this hand can turn those same elements toward material gain, at real cost to the people around them.
11. The Intuitive hand type in palm reading
At first glance this hand looks delicate, almost elegant, and its owners are very often beautiful people, inside and out. This is the second "psychic" hand type, closely related to the Egocentric but warmer and more fragile. The palm is thin, soft, and slender, the fingers thin and smooth, tapering gently to a conic or pointed tip. The thumb sits lower and lighter than the Egocentric's, with a shorter first phalanx of will relative to logic. The Jupiter finger doesn't run as long as it does on the Egocentric hand. The palm itself is pink, thin, warm, and moist, whitening slightly under pressure, with more springiness than the Egocentric palm. Nails run thin, often pale. Lines can be faint and hard to read, much like the Egocentric hand, sometimes very faint indeed. The Luna mount should be noticeably more developed than on the Egocentric hand, pointing to richer imaginative thinking. Thin fingers suggest a timid, quiet disposition, and a small, short thumb adds a further note of meekness, this person rarely raises their voice.
The palm often runs warm, even hot, and moist, showing a fast metabolism, and this hand type tends to run thin and slender in build, burning through fat quickly.
This hand thinks and feels with its whole being, near-constantly, which naturally brings a degree of anxiety, often visible in a heavily lined palm. Very faint lines can sometimes point to a weakened immune system, worth keeping in mind rather than reading too far into.
Being naturally attractive can be a double-edged sword here. Without a strong sense of self-worth and solid guidance early on, this hand type is more vulnerable than most to being taken advantage of, and it's not uncommon to see Intuitive hands drawn into modelling or performance young, careers with a natural shelf life. They tend to love beauty in all its forms, fashion, art, nature, animals, music, poetry, film, theatre, and like the Sensual hand, they're deeply affected by anything emotionally stirring. This is often the most naturally intuitive of all the hand types, genuinely attuned to what others around them are feeling, which makes them wonderfully emotionally intelligent but also means life can feel like carrying the weight of everyone else's feelings too. Surrounding themselves with positive people matters a great deal here.
They often end up with a smaller social circle later in life, which can make growing older harder, reflected in a narrow Venus mount and a life line that hugs it closely, as if uncertain of the wider world. This hand type has a well-earned reputation for generosity, giving to others even amid their own financial worries, and a soft spot for taking in strays, animal or otherwise. Helping others is often, at its root, a way of healing themselves too, something reflected in a heart line that begins low on the palm, broadening this person's natural capacity to care. If they aren't finding an outlet to give in one part of life, they'll usually find it somewhere else. This hand often makes wonderful healers, though the sensitivity that makes them so caring can also make certain fields, like veterinary work, harder going. They tend to do well in social care, nursing, and the more intuitive healing arts, alongside romantic partners who are grounded, steady, and genuinely understanding, often a Practical or Analytical hand, chosen for the stability and quiet confidence this person may not always have themselves.
Managing emotion is a real challenge for this hand, given how sensitive it runs. Many horizontal lines across the palm often point to stress. This hand type absorbs feelings, sometimes even the unspoken feelings of people nearby, and without learning to manage that sensitivity, it can end up at its mercy. Moods can shift quickly as a result. At its most vulnerable, this hand can turn to less healthy coping habits, emotional eating, substance use, or seeking love and validation in the wrong places, often visible in the basal phalanx of the Jupiter finger. Abandonment tends to be a real theme here, this hand craves dependability and stability, and an absent parent early in life can deepen that need considerably.
Physically less robust, this hand's real strength lies elsewhere: a genuine ability to sense what others are feeling or thinking, sometimes even sensing trouble before it's spoken aloud, though this gift rarely extends to seeing clearly into their own future. A clear, strong intuition line suggests real potential to use this ability professionally, with training and practice. As Darwin noted, adaptability is often a species' greatest strength, and this hand's second real gift: enormous emotional flexibility, bending and adjusting to whatever life brings better than most. The flip side is a tendency toward idealism and disappointment when expectations run too high, small setbacks can feel disproportionately large. But when a genuine crisis does arrive, this hand often meets it with surprising calm, delegating and acting steadily while everyone else scrambles.
There's real moral strength here too, a willingness to stand up for what's right regardless of the cost, visible in a long, deeply curved heart line reaching well past the Saturn mount.
This hand inspires through art, performance, writing, and music, offering something genuinely moving to the people who encounter it. Water nourishes, but it can also overwhelm if there's too much of it.
Given how sensitive this hand runs, low mood and anxiety can be a real and ongoing challenge, and it's worth watching the headline's course for any sharp dip into unrealistic or overly dark thinking, particularly on the left hand, gently, and without alarm. If someone with this hand type is struggling, encouraging them to speak with a doctor or therapist matters more than anything a hand can tell you. What tends to help here: creative outlets like cooking, art, dance, or singing, along with yoga, meditation, time in nature, a steady diet, and a genuine understanding of their own psychology, to help steer away from less healthy coping habits.
This hand cares little for material security, and money tends to move through their fingers as quickly as it arrives, visible sometimes in small gaps at the finger knots.
Undue stress can bring on a range of physical symptoms in this hand type more than most, since it isn't naturally the most robust. Anaemia (worth checking nail colour for), chest sensitivity, and spinal strain are worth keeping an eye on, alongside a general encouragement toward gentle exercise and clean living, not a natural priority for this hand, but a genuinely helpful one. A jarred, sharply angled fate line can sometimes hint at back trouble worth mentioning to a doctor.
12. The Composite hand type in palm reading
12. The Composite Hand
Sometimes a hand won't conform neatly to any one type, showing traces of several, or even all, of the elements at once. When this happens, there's no shortcut in relying on a single classification, and in truth, it's genuinely rare to find someone who fits one type perfectly.
When you meet a Composite hand, take note of everything that stands out, set it aside mentally, and come back to it once you've worked through the Chirognomy properly. Rule out the standard types only once you're genuinely confident none of them fit, then ask: what is this palm actually trying to tell me? Often it's telling you something unique, because you've met someone genuinely unique, and their hand speaks its own particular language.
Composite hands are what Cheiro would have called his "mixed 7th" type. They tend to be adaptable, able to get along with almost anyone. Expect an abundance of loops on the fingertips, perhaps a whorl or peacock's eye on the Apollo or Jupiter finger.
These hands can look, at first, a little awkward or mismatched, and the personality tends to follow suit: complicated, drawing from several other types at once. That very uniqueness is itself a sign, this person likely doesn't feel they fit neatly into any one group, may have drifted between social circles growing up, an oddball, a social chameleon, still searching for a firmer sense of self. Reassurance that they've come to the right place to work that out can go a long way.
The strength and size of the thumb, alongside the length and depth of the lines, will show whether this person can pull their many varied talents into a productive, coherent path, or not.
You might find one fingertip square, two rounded, and another spatulate, fingers that don't quite seem to match the hand they belong to. Some may be smooth, others knotted, and nail types can vary too. Wherever this happens, read each finger's psychology on its own terms rather than trying to force uniformity. You may also find one strong angle on an otherwise rounded palm.
Once you've drawn what you can from the Chirognomy, move to the Dermatoglyphics and again note whatever stands out: unusual ridge patterns, apexes out of place, a mix of angles and curves, toughness alongside softness. Let those unique features guide your reading, then move to the Chirology and ask the same question again. Cross-reference everything you find rather than concluding from any single sign, this is especially important with the Composite hand.
Composite hands make for the most complex readings you'll do, and they'll test every skill you have, logic, intuition, or a strong dose of one when the other runs short. There's no safety net here, so don't be afraid to ask your client a question or two along the way; sometimes a question is exactly how you begin to find the answer. If something in the hand feels uncertain, hold off saying it until something else corroborates it. Never conclude from one sign alone, especially not with this hand type.
